About Clifton
Clifton was originally known as ‘Schoenmaker’s Gat’ – the story goes that there was an old shoemaker that lived in the caves in the area, and as the farmers used to pass en route to sell their produce in Cape Town, he would mend their shoes. In the late 19th century, the area was renamed after the owner of the only hotel in the area, Bessie Clifton.
